The OLED Modules test is becoming child’s play

The new USB test board EA 9781-1USB from Electronic Assembly helps developers of applications with OLED graphics displays to save a lot of time. The board makes it possible to run a fast, yet thorough test without the user having to prepare comprehensive test routines or even any suitable hardware – Electronic Assembly are even providing the test software free of charge.

The built-in test board sockets accept all OLED display components from Electronic Assembly with pins and ZIF (zero insertion force) connectors; all necessary driver circuits are fitted already. The matching software, StartDog.exe, is free and includes all functionality.

The board EA 9781-1USB can be connected to a Windows PC via its USB connection, where the StartDog.exe software runs. The tool generates several test images and templates. In addition, you can add your own test images using the drag-and-drop function. Aside from the USB connection, the test board also provides a SPI interface to become connected to any of your microcontroller. This allows you to operate your own applications quickly and in an uncomplicated way. Additional hardware is no longer needed.

In addition to this and without buying any hardware, StartOLED.exe contains a full OLED simulation for Windows. With that, developers can display any available model from their comprehensive assortment of OLED displays on their PC screen and replicate its behaviour. In this way, the selection of display models is becoming child’s play and ideal for the planned application – including colour and resolution. The software can be downloaded from Electronic Assembly’s website free of charge: another example of how Electronic Assembly consequently implements its guiding principle “Making things easy” in real life.

Electronic Assembly turns 40!

ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY GmbH was established in 1977 and has grown into one of the most important partners for modern display technologies in industrial sectors.

It began with power saving kits for LCD clocks, an entirely new display technology.

The interest in LCDs was very high, and functional modules like voltmeters and various counter modules developed quickly. Soon the first controller boards were invented, assembled and distributed along with LCDs. With segment and dot matrix modules, and later with graphic displays, ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY captured its market. In the mid-1990’s ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY was one of the first companies to develop touch panels and launched a professional control unit with its own flash memory, operating software and integrated touch panel evaluation.  Thus, the idea of developing intelligent displays and control units was brought further into focus.

With the highest quality, long-term availability, best support and one of the largest display warehouses in Europe, the company inspires the confidence of their customers in all sectors of industry and medicine.

Today, ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY ranks among the best R&D companies in the European display market, thanks to its development efforts, production and decades of know-how.

The company is now extremely successful worldwide and has recently introduced the brand DISPLAY VISIONS to the international market. With the new display series, like the special chip on glass series, the intelligent uniTFTs and the sensational OLED series launched in 2017, the general managers Carola Wittmann and Stefan Eber are looking well equipped for the future.

Compact OLED modules break new ground in their range of uses

With a wide range of extremely compact OLED displays, ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY has paved the way for new fields of use. The monochromatic display elements now come in a variety of designs featuring different sizes, profiles, resolutions and colours to suit various uses – even where it has not been possible to integrate a screen until now. Examples include wearables, pocket instruments and generally devices which involve a very compact design combined with low energy requirements.

The low-power OLED displays by ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY come in round, square and rectangular designs. The diagonal size of the smallest display unit is hardly 0.66” (just under 1.7 cm). Their extremely flat construction (starting at 2.05 mm) allows all display elements to be fitted neatly into miniaturised devices. A further strength of the OLED displays made by ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY is their versatility: as full-screen graphic displays with up to 16,384 pixels, they allow graphical and alphanumeric elements to be combined on the screen. All versions have a built-in graphics controller which can optionally be ordered with an SPI or I2C bus interface and a 3.3 volt logic operating voltage.

All displays are designed for operating temperatures between -40°C and +80°C. This huge temperature range allows them to be used both outdoors in winter temperatures and in extremely hot industrial environment. Other universal features include the large viewing angle of 170 degrees and the high contrast ratio of 2000:1, which together make the displays extremely good to read. The displays also respond very quickly even at low temperatures; a typical value is 10 microseconds, even at -40° C! Thanks to the patented OLED technology, the displays also have a possible lifetime of 50,000 to 100,000 operating hours, depending on the colour and ambient temperature. The display elements are available in yellow, white and blue.

Expansion of Intelligent EA uniTFT Modules

Just a few months after ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY launched its EA uniTFT product family, it is already being expanded with the presentation of a new display variant with a diagonal screen measurement of 10.1 inches at embedded world in Nuremberg. Developed in-house, the new intelligent display modules with object graphics open up a wealth of new options for the user. Design engineers and systems integrators benefit from considerably shorter development times and gain significantly more flexibility. As a result, the modules open up a whole raft of new options for developers and users.

The new EA uniTFT101 makes it remarkably easy to combine, modify and adapt a great many objects to a particular need. All objects can be positioned, rotated and zoomed in as required on the screen. Attributes such as transparency and color can be assigned also. Moving objects, too, are now possible for the first time, while the display also offers the option of linking objects to actions. It couldn't be easier for design engineers needing to create keys, dials and other control elements and assign specific functions to them. In addition to the screen diagonals of 5 inches, a 10.1-inch diagonal is also now available.

Screen with object graphics opens up a wealth of new options
With the use of style sheets, it is also possible to standardize the look of these elements, thereby creating elegant and user-friendly designs. Thanks to Unicode, all fonts of the world can be represented, guaranteeing global application. uniSKETCH, a specially designed PC graphic tool, enables users to create screen layouts and interfaces, edit the properties of objects and adapt style sheets. Tones can also be incorporated for a range of functions from acoustic feedback for operating procedures to entire jingles.

Also available as an option are display modules with a touch panel that use resistive or PCAP technology. With the PCAP Touch, multi-touch inputs familiar from smartphones and tablet computers can also be provided. The appropriate touch controller and software are already integrated into the display modules.

Where they are to be connected to external devices, actuators and sensors, the display modules are able to access all interfaces that are significant for industrial electronics – such as SPI, RS-232, I2C-Bus and USB. Several analog inputs, one PWM output and 16 digital I/O channels allow the module to be integrated into all types of control tasks. Moreover, the video input also provides for the direct playback of video signals. Also new is the internal macro language, which enables the displays to be operated as stand-alones for the simultaneous control of other devices.

First study, then try out
The company explains the new features of the uniTFT display by Augmented Reality (AR) app. Available for iPhone and Android systems, the free app provides an unprecedented means of displaying in-depth information on what is probably the most innovative fitted control unit in the world. It is based on the print advert that is to appear as part of an advertising campaign across a large range of media for the uniTFT, but is also available for downloading on the website. Point the camera of a smartphone or tablet at the ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY advert and the module comes alive, and at the same time a short humorous film is launched on the display! The app also provides valuable information on this new screen with the aid of a 3D model. Why not try it out?

High Contrast, Long Life: Versatile OLED Modules

Thanks to their high contrast and extraordinarily wide viewing angle, OLED displays offer outstanding readability. In its EA OLEDL128-6 product family, ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLY now has a display module in its portfolio that boasts all these advantages. But there's even more to it than that: it has a life of over 50,000 hours of operation. Another unique selling point is the very rapid response time of this display, which loses nothing of its snap even at arctic temperatures as low as -40°C.

The display modules of the OLEDL128-6 family are available in three versions. The entry version has the type designation OLED128-6LGA. The OLED128-6GGA version of the display is fitted with an additional front screen to protect against scratching and UV rays and to establish a defined distance from the front of the device; the OLED128-6NGA comes without a polarizer but does have a silver background, making it ideal for installation behind a tinted glass screen. This version also meets higher aesthetic standards for devices intended for use in the home, for instance. The accessories available for all versions include a touch panel that can be used to realize modern, interactive device control systems.

Data exchange with the control electronics is optionally via an SPI or I2C interface. The modules are fitted with connecting pins in a 2.54 mm (0.1”) grid, making them suitable both for initial prototypes built on the breadboard and for series production because soldering into a PCB obviates the need for any further assembly techniques or structures.
